A redesigned Adeline Street and new plaza would create a community gathering place, including for the Berkeley Flea Market, while also improving the ability of people to safely bike, walk, and connect to transit.
Give input, ask questions, and learn more at a virtual meeting about the design for a large new community plaza at the Ashby BART station.
The plaza and a reconfigured Adeline Street will be created as part of BART’s development of the station parking lots, which will be converted into housing.
We’ll share potential designs for this new plaza, which will extend on the west side of Adeline Street all the way between Ashby Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
The plaza itself will serve as a communal space, including for the Berkeley Flea Market. But the redesigned street will also be more inclusive for however people prefer to move. Each version will:
- have southbound protected bike lanes alongside the plaza
- prioritize buses through the corridor
- increase safety for pedestrian crossings

Improving safety and public transit needs
Redesigning Adeline Street to improve transportation safety is also a community-driven goal of the Adeline Corridor Specific Plan, which was approved by City Council in 2020.
The City of Berkeley Planning & Development and Public Works Departments work together to ensure that future development at the Ashby and North Berkeley BART stations serves future and current residents.
