Play a critical role in making sure everyone in Berkeley is counted
Apply now for flexible Census Bureau jobs, and get paid $25/hour while making an impact on your community that lasts 10 years.
Starting in May, Census takers will go door to door visiting households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census and help them complete their forms. As a Census taker, you'd play a critical role in making sure everyone in Berkeley gets counted, ensuring that we get our fair share of federal funding and political representation over the next decade.
Having more Census counters from Berkeley helps improve the count because they'll be more familiar with our community and the people who live here.
Census takers have flexible hours, so these positions work well as a second job or for anyone trying to balance work with school or caretaking responsibilities. You'd get paid for training and have short commutes because you'll be assigned to work in your own community.
These jobs are an especially good fit for those who:
- enjoy working with people
- are comfortable interacting with new people
- can work evenings or weekends
- speak more than one language
There are still hundreds of Census taker jobs left to fill in Alameda County, but it's best to apply as soon as possible to ensure your application is considered.
How to apply
The application is simple and can be completed online in 30 minutes at 2020census.gov/jobs.
To apply, you need only:
- active email address
- social Security Number
- date and place of birth
- home address
You do not need to submit a resume or cover letter.
Candidates will have to pass a criminal background check, including fingerprinting, but formerly incarcerated individuals will be considered. The Census Bureau will evaluate each case individually.
Tips for completing your application
When filling out your online application:
- Use a computer, not a smartphone if possible
- Check all the options under availability - your schedule may change by the time these jobs start, so this lets the Census Bureau know you are flexible.
- Check yes when asked if you have access to a vehicle, even if you rely on public transit or rideshare services. These count as transportation.
