Public Health

Mayor Arreguin knows access to healthcare is key to community well-being, and is working to identify and address disparities.

For example, African Americans make up less than 10 percent of Berkeley's residents, but represent 40 percent of clients of the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services and Berkeley Mental Health.

To address these and other inequities, the Mayor's Office is working to open an African American Holistic Resource Center that would, among other things, offer culturally sensitive therapy and support services.

Local Regional Health Task Force

The Mayor has put together a Regional Health Task Force that is focusing on issues such as nutrition education, urban agriculture, services for seniors and school-based services. The group is also working to keep Alta Bates hospital and emergency room open beyond 2030.
